A NEW JAMES BURKE BOOK
It’s been a while since the last James Burke book. This has been partly because the last book I wrote was Monsters in the Mist in the Galbraith & Pole series, but mainly because Burke and the War of 1812 has just needed a lot more research than most of the recent James Burke books. It sees Burke fighting a whole new kind of war in a whole new country, as he joins the forces defending Canada against invasion by the United States.
I started writing it long before Donald Trump meant the subject matter suddenly topical again — quite a feat after over 200 years. If you have heard people talking about the War of 1812 and had no idea what it was (and most people haven’t) here’s a relatively painless way to find out.
As the United States sets its sights on expansion, James Burke, part spy, part diplomat, is sent to gather crucial intelligence and navigate the treacherous political landscape. His journey takes him from the tribal homes of the Shawnee people to the heart of Washington in the run-up to open conflict along the Canada-US border.
When war breaks out, he finds himself where he always wanted to be – proudly wearing the uniform of the King and leading his troops into battle. But when victory is followed by looting and massacre, he has to question the life he has chosen. From the bloody battlefields to the halls of power, Burke’s journey will have lasting consequences for both himself and the future of North America.

An experiment in new technology
I spend a lot of my time with my head in the 19th century, so it’s hardly surprising that I struggle with 21st century technology. But I’m playing with the idea of installing a buy button that will let you purchase paperback copies of Burke in the Land of Silver directly online. More exciting technological developments
Thanks to the wonders of AI, Amazon can now transform text to speech and make every book an audio book. So far, this is only available in the US, but I’m trying it out with Something Wicked. Because it’s not available in Britain, I haven’t actually heard it. I doubt it’s good as good as a professional human narrator but it may be better than my own amateur efforts.
